Michael Hott, RLM 11.176: The Ionization Problem

Quantum mechanics celebrated its big victory when it allowedto correctly compute the energy levels of the hydrogen atom andits orbital wave functions. Ever since, both, mathematiciansand physicists, have not been able to analytically solve thesequestions for atoms with higher nucleon number. In particular,the question arises, given a nuclear charge how many electronsthat atom can bind. It is conjectured, that there is a universalconstant C such that an atom of nuclear charge Z can bind exactlyat most Z+C atoms. We will address this question with different,also geometric, approaches and see some recent results. Thistalk is inspired by talks given by R. Frank in Rome and Montreal.
