Duncan McCoy, RLM 12.166: Characterizing slopes for hyperbolic and torus knots
Monday, September 24, 2018, 02:00pm - 03:00pm
Given a knot $K$ in $S^3$, we say that $p/q$ is a characterizingslope if the oriented homeomorphism type of $p/q$-surgery on$K$ is sufficient to uniquely determine the knot $K$. It is knownthat for a given torus knot all but finitely many non-integerslopes are characterizing and that for hyperbolic knots all butfinitely many slopes with q greater than 2 are characterizing.I will discuss the proofs of both results, which have a surprisingamount in common.
