Wed: Our first class day. We'll go over the syllabus, class schedule and start on sections 1.1-1.3 (level curves, parametrized curves, length, tangent vectors, reparametrizations).

Fri: last day of official add/drop period. The plan is to go over sections 1.1-1.3.

Feb 3
Mon: The plan is to finish chapters 2 and 3 and possibly start on chapter 4. We will go over chapter 3 somewhat quickly.

Wed: Last day an undergraduate student may add a class except for rare and extenuating circumstances. Last day to drop a class for a possible refund. (See General Information, Academic Policies and Procedures, for details.)

Fri: We covered up to 3.2.

Mon: Take-home quiz #1 was due. Sorry, I haven't written solutions to it.

We went over how regular curves are determined by curvature and torsion and then went over 3.3.

Wed: The plan is to start chapter 4.

Fri: We almost finished 4.2.

Section 4.2: #1, 2(it's OK to handle only one transition map), 3, 4, 7.
Section 4.3: 2.

Due: Mon Feb 13.

Also finish reading chapter 4 and start on chapter 5.

Feb 13-17
Mon: Take-home Quiz #2 was due. Solutions.

The plan is to finish chapter 4 and cover 5.1, 5.3, 5.4. We will cover chapter 5 quickly. For example, I do not intend on lecturing on 5.2 (quadric surfaces) although you should read it. Also we'll skip 5.5 (triply orthogonal surfaces). Also we've already discussed 5.6 (inverse function theorem) so there's no reason to go back over it. There won't be a quiz due next week.

Wed:

Fri: We did not get to chapter 5. We're almost finished with chapter 4 (we still haven't discussed signed angles on oriented surfaces).

Mon: We went over 6.4 and basically skipped 6.5. The plan for the week is to cover as much as chapter 7 as we can. I'm guessing we'll get through 7.2 at least and maybe 7.3 too.

Fri: The core sections of the book that are left are: 8.3, 9.1, 9.2, 9.4, 10.1, 10.2, 10.4, 12.1 and chapter 13. We might cover other sections or just go over them lightly.

For Friday, the plan is to go back over some parts of 7.4 that we didn't have to time to cover last time and then cover 8.3 (the pseudosphere) and if there's time 8.6 (closed surfaces have some positive curvature).

This week Professors Lorenzo Sadun and Dan Freed are covering chapter 9 on geodesics.
